Bulletin on Extension of Pilot Project of International Search Unit under the Patent Cooperation Treaty between CNIPA and EPO
China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) and the European Patent Office (EPO) have issued a joint communique announcing that the pilot project for international search units under the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) between the two offices will be extended by one year from December 1, 2022 to November 30, 2023.
Under the program, Chinese applicants can select the EPO as the international search unit for their PCT applications. The pilot project applies to PCT applications submitted in English to the CNIPA or the International Offices of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), with a limited number of 3,000 during the extension period. An application for an international search completed by the EPO will not be subject to a supplementary European search.
Since its launch on December 1, 2020, more than 270 applicants have actively participated in the program. The pilot project is an important outcome of the comprehensive strategic cooperation between the two offices, facilitating applicants' access to intellectual property protection in Europe.
