The Number of EU Patent Applications Hits a New Record in 2021, and Huawei Became the Most Frequent Applicant.

According to the data released by the European Patent Office (EPO), the number of patent applications in Europe in 2021 was almost 190,000, with a year-on-year increase of 4.5%.

根据欧专局(EPO)公布的数据,2021年欧洲专利申请量约19万件,同比增长4.5%。

With more than 46,000 applications, the United States became the country with the highest total number of applications, accounting for 25% of all applications, with a year-on-year increase of about 5%. Germany ranked second with nearly 26,000 applications, Japan had almost 22,000 applications, and China ranked fourth with an increase of approximately 25% to nearly 17,000 applications.

China's Huawei became the biggest applicant in Europe in 2021, with more than 35 hundred applications, followed by Samsung (about 34 hundred) and LG (approximately 24 hundred).

Digital communication technology was the most popular sector with more than 15,000 applications, a year-on-year increase of about 9%. The field of medical technology ranked second with about 15,000 applications, a year-on-year increase of almost 1%. Computer technology ranked third, with more than 14,000 applications, which represented a year-on-year increase of nearly 10%.

Overall, applications in most technical fields increased in 2021, with the largest increase up to 27% in microstructure and nanotechnology, a 24% increase in audio-visual technology, and a 21% increase in semiconductors.

On the contrary, areas with declining numbers included basic communication processes (decreasing by about 7%), biomaterial analysis (decreasing by 6%), basic material chemistry (decreasing by nearly 5%) and textile and paper machinery (decreasing by more than 4%).

In addition, the EPO announced that it would increase the search time limit from about 4 months in 2020 to nearly 5 months in 2021, reduce the examination time limit from almost 24 months to 23 months, and increase the average duration of objection procedures from about 15 months to approximately 19 months.

除此以外,EPO公布将检索时效从2020年的4.3个月提高到2021年4.8个月,审查时效从23.7个月降到23.0个月,异议程序的平均持续时间从15.4个月增加到19.3个月。
