Key Statistical Data on Intellectual Property in China from January to July 2024

Recently, the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) released a quick report on the key statistical data for intellectual property from January to July 2024. Compared to January to July 2023, the number of invention patents granted increased by 26.16%, utility models decreased by 6.27%, and design patents increased by 10.02%.

Quick Report on Key Statistical Data on Intellectual Property from January to July 2024


1. Patents

From January to July 2024, the number of invention patents granted in China was 650,000, utility model patents granted were 1,175,000, and design patents granted were 359,000.

As of the end of July 2024, the number of valid invention patents in China was 5.416 million, of which 4.419 million were domestic (excluding Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan). The number of valid utility model patents was 11.526 million, and the number of valid design patents was 3.017 million.

From January to July, CNIPA received 39,000 PCT international patent applications, of which 36,000 were submitted by domestic applicants.

From January to June, Chinese applicants submitted 1,004 international design applications. From January to July, a total of 1,340 international design applications designating China were published.


2. Trademarks

From January to July, the number of trademark applications in China was 4.11 million; the number of trademark registrations was 2.892 million. As of July 2024, the number of valid registered trademarks reached 48.374 million.

From January to July, CNIPA received 4,221 Madrid international trademark registration applications from Chinese applicants.


3. Geographical Indications and Integrated Circuit Layout Designs

From January to July, CNIPA recognized 15 geographical indication products, approved 107 registrations of geographical indications as collective trademarks or certification trademarks, and approved 5,358 business entities to use special geographical indication marks. As of July 2024, a total of 2,523 geographical indication products had been approved, 7,384 collective trademarks or certification trademarks registered as geographical indications, and 30,551 business entities approved to use special geographical indication marks.

From January to July, China received 6,371 applications for integrated circuit layout design registrations and issued 6,092 certificates.
