Recently, the China National Intellectual Property Administration released a report on the main statistical data of intellectual property for January to September 2024. Compared to the same period in 2023, the number of invention patent authorizations increased by 16.91%, while utility models decreased by 5.45% and design patents declined by 5.32%.

I. Patents

From January to September 2024, the number of invention patent authorizations in China reached 817,000, utility model patents amounted to 1.51 million, and design patent authorizations totaled 462,000.

As of the end of September 2024, the effective number of invention patents in China was 5.518 million, with domestic (excluding Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan) effective invention patents accounting for 4.533 million. The effective number of utility model patents was 11.406 million, and design patents were 2.981 million.

From January to September, the China National Intellectual Property Administration accepted 53,000 PCT international patent applications, of which domestic applicants submitted 49,000.

During the same period, Chinese applicants submitted 1,594 international design patent applications, with 1,813 publicly disclosed international design applications designating China.

II. Trademarks

From January to September, China recorded 5.296 million trademark applications and 3.586 million trademark registrations. As of September 2024, the number of valid registered trademarks stood at 48.897 million.

In the same period, the China National Intellectual Property Administration received 5,431 international trademark registration applications under the Madrid System from Chinese applicants.

III. Geographical Indications and Integrated Circuit Layout Designs

From January to September, the China National Intellectual Property Administration recognized 15 geographical indication products, approved 116 registrations of geographical indications as collective trademarks and certification trademarks, and permitted 6,820 entities to use geographical indication exclusive logos.

As of September 2024, a cumulative total of 2,523 geographical indication products have been approved, with 7,393 registrations of geographical indications as collective trademarks and certification trademarks, and 31,744 entities authorized to use geographical indication exclusive logos.

From January to September, there were 8,325 applications for integrated circuit layout design registrations, with 7,703 certificates issued.
